Video Helps Home Builder Sell New Home Inventory

In a recent spoof dedicated to the hurting Home Building Industry; I delivered a video advertisement disguised as a public service announcement decrying a cure for all of our housing woes. I use the word "our," because like most of you, I too am a home building professional working harder after the bust.

I have the privilege of selling the best new homes in the country, (and if you doubt it, stop by my community and bring your check book for an earnest money deposit!) Seriously, I know that the new construction boom times have slowed. For many of us - it's getting harder to write contracts on dirt, and liquidate aging spec home inventory.

Bill Joll, CEO of On2 Technologies, announced his company has developed a video compression codec that will enable flash video to be optimized for mobile device video usage.

So, why do you care? According to Andy Plesser of Beet.TV, "The Flash video ecosystem has has become the most widely deployed platform for streaming video on the Web.  Video sharing sites, news organizations, governments, institutions and many others use the platform.  Most of Adobe's installed base, some 80 percent, are using Flash 8 and/or 9."

Basically, this means that if you can create video content, (let's say, new home virtual tours) upload it to a free video sharing site on the Web - your multimedia content will have the opportunity to be viewed on hundreds of million cell phone and mobile device users.

Local Celebrities on "The Real Estate Home Show?"

Do it yourself home video tours? Almost.

"The Real Estate Home Show" is the latest New Home Marketing 2.0 offering from ExplicitMedia design and advertising solutions. To their credit, they are one of the first Internet companies to offer Web 2.0 services to the tech savvy street level real estate professional.

Utilizing the explosion of no cost online video networks such as YouTube and Google Video , The REHS offers a relatively easy, and inexpensive way to market real estate online.

Their entry level service which starts at $79 for a 40 second home video tour is a good value considering that the same service five years ago would have cost about five times that. Video hosting is included, and the sales agent merely has to take a half dozen digital pictures of a home, and upload them to The Real Estate Home Show's website. Adding a few details and specifics about the property provides information for a script, and REHS produces a voice over narrated video slide show ready to distribute in about 48 hours.

The technology and skill to create this kind of real estate video tour is not the most innovative part of this marketing service. (Almost anyone can do this with free software, a microphone, and an Internet connection.) What is unique to ExplicitMedia's offering is a well developed distribution platform, which includes the opportunity to distribute video tours to millions of potential buyers via partnerships with major satellite and cable companies (for an additional charge.)

It will be interesting to see how The Real Estate Home Show will progress their technology development in 2007 and beyond. For now, this is a good example of early stage New Home Marketing 2.0 services, and the direction of house marketing to come.
